Scanner Frequencies
Here's the long awaited update to the scanner section of the webpage! It will eventually become the update to the whole website, I think. Currently, I don't have a radio in my car. I used to have a Realistic PRO-2066 but since the city and county are both operate on digital trunking systems, the 2066 is virtually useless. So, it's just my litte HT, the PRO-96, that I use. I use an ICOM TC-T7A for 2-meter and 440 band communication under the station id KC7YAQ.

When I started this website, I was in Las Vegas. Since I don't live there any longer, I can not keep the pages up-to-date personally. It seems the information is still useful so I leave it up but I can not vouch for the accuracy any longer.

I'm now living in the Valley of the Sun so that's where I'm building my lists of frequencies.

PL Tones

I've started to include PL tones. I found PL tones to be very handy for filtering out stray noise or signals that are too weak to really hear. If there is no PL tone received, the scanner channel won't activate. To that end, I recommend using PL tones when the broadcasting agency uses them.

  • Wickenburg Scanner Information  ( 1 items )
Wickenburg is a quiet little community northwest of Phoenix along US 60. It is also the junction point for US 60 and US 93 which will be familiar to anybody who drives to and from Las Vegas. There is a small police force with a few radio channels. Ambulance service is provided by Lifeline Ambulance. Maricopa County broadcasts a few talkgroups out of the Yavapii translator which reaches into the area.
  • Rural/Metro Fire  ( 2 items )
  • Phoenix Fire Department  ( 2 items )
The Phoenix Valley is served by a centralized Fire dispatch system. This way, there are no city boundaries between calls. If an emergency in one city can be more quickly served by a fire unit in neighboring city (maybe the fire station is right over the border) then the neighboring city's fire unit can be dispatched. There are 19 fire departments serving 28 cities as well as Luke A.F.B. and Palo Verde Nuclear.  Note, Mesa is not part of the dispatch system even though they can be reached through some of the channel on PFD radios.

For now, the fire department is still using the VFH frequencies and have taken a pass on the 800mHz trunking system that the rest of the Phoenix services have switched to. They had concerns about safety of fire fighters onscene and in an incident. The latest report, published dated June 10, 2005, has laid out requirements needed before making the move. I have heard that the concern was with building penetration of the 700/800mHz frequencies but most reports shows these frequencies pass all tests. The major concern was switching to a simplex operation in a trunked system. The 2005 report can be found here.
  • Highway Patrol Scanner Frequencies  ( 2 items )
The Arizona highway patrol, under the Department of Public Safety, broadcasts across the 440mHz radio band. There are 11 frequencies in the band and most of them server two different districts -- one in the Phoenix metro area and one in an area at the other end of the state. The calls are seperated by using different pl tones. Districts 1-4,C, and E use pl tone 100.0. Districts 6-12 and W use pl tone 151.4.

Likewise, the criminal investigative divisions share frequencies but differ by PL tones. 1 and 2 use 100.0. 3 and 4 use 151.4. Statewide operations and Statewide TAC share the same frequency using PL tones 100.0 and 151.4 respectively.
